In Santiago de Chile, the female volleyball team from the Dominican Republic once again displayed their dominance at the 2023 Pan American Games, securing the gold medal, just as they had done four years ago in Lima 2019. The Central American team clinched a resounding 3-0 victory over Brazil, who had fielded an alternate national team, to claim the championship.

The first set was tightly contested, with the Dominicans edging out a 26-24 win. However, in the subsequent two sets, the team under the guidance of Marcos Kwiek left no room for the Brazilian team to mount a comeback, closing out with convincing leads of 25-16 and 25-19.

With this victory, the Dominican Republic added its fourth medal in the history of women’s volleyball at the Pan American Games. They now have three gold medals, including the one from today, along with the victories in Lima 2019 and Santo Domingo 2003, as well as a bronze from Toronto 2015.

The match began with a balance that could be attributed more to the Dominican team’s lack of intensity than the skill of the Brazilian players. A critical attacking error by Sabrina Machado in the first set handed the Central American team an advantage that would ultimately lead them to a resounding victory.

In the second set, the Dominican Republic established an insurmountable 11-2 lead, leaving the South American team struggling to recover. The final score for the set was 25-16, highlighting a clear difference in the quality of offense and the blocking power of both teams.

In the third set, the final continued in the same vein, and the match was sealed with an ace from Brayelin Martínez, who ironically was the top scorer of the game with 13 points. On the Brazilian side, Sabrina Machado stood out with 12 points. Defensively, the Dominican player Cándida Arias proved to be a formidable blockade, tallying 5 successful blocks.
