The 2025 Copa America Femenina is taking place in Quito, Ecuador, from July 11 to August 2. The competition started with ten South American teams fighting for a place in the semifinals and qualification spots for the 2026 Women’s World Cup and Los Angeles 2028 Olympics Games. Argentina dominated Group A, winning three of their three games. Their attack was effective, and defense held firm. After close games against Chile and Ecuador, Uruguay finished in second place. Peru lost all four games and finished last in the group. Group B saw Brazil shine once again. Kerolin’s hat-trick and impressive performances from Luany and Marta helped them win all three of their group games, including a 6-0 victory over Bolivia. Colombia finished second with strong performances, including a goalless draw and a 4-1 victory over Paraguay.

Brazil finished with nine points the group stage. Colombia came next with eight, and Venezuela was eliminated with four. After Colombia and Brazil advanced to the semifinals, they went seperate waysin the bracket. In a thrilling semifinal match played on July 28 at Quito’s Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado, Colombia defeated Argentina to secure their spot in the final —and a spot into the women’s football competition at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. “We are finalists and we qualified for the Olympics in Los Angeles, that was our objective,” stated goalie Katherine Tapia after making a crucial save in the shootout.
Linda Caicedo proved decisive once again, matching her game-winning goal from the 2022 semifinal against Argentina, as Colombia won a penalty shootout 5–4 following a tense, goalless match. Her poise and foresight secured Colombia’s second-ever trip to the Copa America final. Argentina was struggling in the shootout despite having an ideal group stage and a cohesive team. They leave the competition without making it to a second straight final, demonstrating Colombia’s increasing advantage in this rivalry.

Brazil and Uruguay faced off in the tournament’s second semifinal on July 29 at Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado in Quito. Brazil came into the game as huge favorites after winning Group B with impressive performances, including a 6-0 victory over Bolivia and performances by Kerolin, Luany, and Marta. Uruguay, who finished second in Group A behind Argentina, made a historic return to the semifinals for the first time since 2006. The Uruguayan team, supported by previous victories over Peru and Chile in the group stage, demonstrated excellent organization and determination despite being viewed as “not too good”.
For the majority of the game, Uruguay’s defense held firm, stopping Brazil’s attacks and demonstrating the tactical discipline that Brazilian head coach Arthur Elias praised. But in the end, Brazil’s offensive depth proved to be too formidable. Cláudia filled in for their starting goalkeeper Lorena, who was suspended, and played well. The team qualified for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and guaranteed their spot in the Copa America final. Brazil maintained their supremacy in South American women’s football, while Uruguay’s defeat indicated the end of an inspiring run.

In order to maintain their dominance in South American women’s football, Brazil is expected to win the Copa América Femenina final in 2025. They are the apparent favorites because of their potent attacking ability and excellent teamwork. Colombia, however, has demonstrated that they are capable of handling the situation. Colombia has the ability to surprise Brazil if they maintain discipline and take advantage on important opportunities, especially with Linda Caicedo leading the attack and a defense that kept Argentina at away. Even though Brazil is most likely to win, a surprise victory by Colombia is still possible.
